RULES

Article 1 – Purpose

Each year, at the Official Selection of the Festival de Cannes, the Commission Supérieure Technique de l’Image et du Son (CST) awards two awards recognizing technical and artistic excellence in the field of cinema:

  • The CST AWARD for Best Artist-Technician
  • The CST AWARDS for Best Young Female Film Technician

These awards highlight creative and technical know-how among cinema professionals.

Article 2 – Eligibility Conditions

2.1 CST AWARD for Best Artist-Technician

  • This prize is open to technicians who contributed to the production of a film selected in the Official Competition at the Festival de Cannes.
  • The laureate is chosen for their outstanding technical and artistic contribution that enhances the filmmaker’s vision.
  • Only one laureate is named at each edition.
  • Special mentions are not permitted.

 

2.2 CST AWARD for Best Young Female Film Technician

  • This prize is open to a young woman under forty years of age working as a department head in image, sound, or set design on a French film presented in one of the Festival’s official selections.
  • The prize is awarded annually as long as it remains necessary to promote professional equality in technical cinema professions.
  • Only one laureate is named at each edition.
  • Special mentions are not permitted.

Article 3 – Nomination of Candidates / Pre-selection

  • For the CST AWARD for Best Artist-Technician, all technicians on films in competition are considered potentially eligible without needing to submit an application.
  • For the CST AWARD for Best Young Female Film Technician, the President and Vice-Presidents of the CST select the nominees based on French films in the Official Selection whose technical crew is known one week before the Festival begins.

Article 4 – Jury and Deliberation

  • Each year, a gender-balanced jury of qualified professionals is appointed by the CST President and Vice-Presidents for each prize.
  • The jury for the CST AWARD for Best Artist-Technician includes several members chosen from various cinema professions and cultural personalities.
  • The jury for the CST AWARD for Best Young Female Film Technician consists of two members chosen from cinema professions and cultural personalities.
  • The CST provides travel and accommodation to jury members who do not already have accommodation on site. Meals and reimbursements are the responsibility of each jury member.
  • All jury members must be present from the opening to the closing of the Festival de Cannes and comply with these rules.
  • Jury members deliberate freely, each having one vote. At the end of deliberations, the jury presents a statement justifying their choice.

Article 5 – Awards and Rewards

  • The CST AWARDS are featured in the Official Festival de Cannes winners list.

    Article 6 – Schedule & Communication

    • The lists of juries and nominees for the CST AWARD for Young Female Technician are published before the Festival de Cannes.
    • The laureates are announced on the day the Official Winners List is revealed and are immediately communicated in the media, on the CST website, and through the Festival’s communication channels.
    • The official award ceremony for both awards takes place after the Festival de Cannes in Paris.

    Article 7 – Miscellaneous Provisions

    • In cases of force majeure or exceptional circumstances, the CST may adjust the schedule or postpone the awarding of the awards.
    • These rules are publicly accessible on the CST website and the CST AWARDS website.
