JEAN VIVIÉ AWARDS
The Jean Vivié Award is awarded to projectionists and editors working at the Cannes Film Festival and Film Market. By highlighting two of them, this award rewards the professionalism and rigor of the work of the large team of projectionists and maintenance staff who enable Festival audiences to enjoy one of the best cinematic experiences in the world.
The “Débiteur d’Or” rewarded the work of technicians who had particularly distinguished themselves during the Festival. The CST awarded this prize from 1984 to 2000.
This distinction, which referred to the toothed cylinder that engaged the perforations in the film to advance it, was traditionally awarded at the technicians’ luncheon the day after the closing ceremony.
In 2001, the “Débiteur d’Or” was renamed the Jean Vivié Award in honor of one of the founding members of the CST, a pioneer of technical controls in the film industry.

Who was Jean Vivié ?
A visionary engineer, Jean Vivié (1904-1972) helped found the Vaugirard school (later ENS Louis-Lumière) in 1936, and the Contrôle Technique du Cinéma in 1942, which became the CST in 1948. He subsequently contributed to the considerable enrichment of the Cinémathèque’s collections, and was behind the construction, between 1966 and 1967, of the first building for the conservation of films on security film, which was to become the CNC’s Direction du Patrimoine Cinématographique.
Although Jean Vivié’s life is impossible to summarize in a few lines, the CST has decided to pay tribute to one of its founders by naming one of its Cannes awards after him.
Who was Claude Soulé ?
Claude Soulé was a permanent employee of the CST from 1954 to 1990, and General Manager for the last 15 years of his career. He was instrumental in setting up the systematic inspection of movie theaters (between 1979 and 2012), which explains the quality of France’s movie theaters. In Cannes, he set up the CST’s support for the Festival’s Technical Department, and was the creator of the Débiteur d’or award.
