The 65th edition of the CST Cannes Film Festival AWARDS came to a close with the presentation of awards to the winners.

Angelo Cosimano, president of the CST, opened the evening by inviting Alain Nemarq, President of Mauboussin and Franck Jeantet, General Manager of Publicis drugstore, to take the stage. Alain Nemarq spoke about Mauboussin’s commitment to cinema and in particular to the CST. Cinema and jewellery both combine technical excellence with artistic know-how. Franck Jeantet reiterated his alliance with the CST, which last year awarded the Excellence Label to the venue hosting this event.

Every year, the CST teams up with a photographer to present the winners with a photograph from his or her personal collection. Following on from Raymond Depardon and Carole Bellaïche, Sylvie Lancrenon did us the honour of supporting the CST awards. Sylvie also directed Mauboussin’s latest promotional film, which was screened for the audience.

The first prize awarded was the CST Award for Young Female Film Technician. Claudine Nougaret, Vice-president of the CST, pointed out the figures regarding male/female parity at the Cannes Festival. In the Official Selection in 2023, 90% of lighting, sound and decoration supervisors were men, compared with 78% in 2022. This year, there were six candidates for the prize, compared with four last year.

Thierry Teboul – AFDAS, Managing Director

Thierry Teboul, Managing Director of AFDAS, reiterated AFDAS’s commitment to promoting gender equality and the prevention of all kinds of violence, in particular through training. He also drew a parallel between the existence of the prize and the subject of Anna Novion’s film Le Théorème de Marguerite, which deals – among other things – with a woman’s journey in a very masculine environment.

Applauded by the audience, an emotional Anne-Sophie Delseries received the prize from Thierry Teboul and Sylvie Lancrenon’s photograph from Angelo Cosimano.

Anne-Sophie thanked director Anna Novion, Gilles Sacuto and Melina Poylo of TS Productions for their collaboration, as well as Jacques Girault, the film’s director of photography and her entire team. She was delighted to have received the award and hopes that in a few years’ time it will no longer need to exist. She also praised the excellent work of the other nominees.

Angelo Cosimano thanked Martine Barraqué and Mario Tommasini for their dedication as jury members.

This was followed by the presentation of the Award for best Artist-Technician. Carla Ballivian, Head of Social Support for working professionals at Audiens and Charles Bussienne, Managing Director of Poly-Son Post-Production, joined the CST’s president on stage.

Carla Ballivian reminded us that Audiens has been a partner of the CST award since 2015. This partnership reflects Audiens’ commitment to a large artistic family that is both creative and technical and to which they have a strong attachment. Audiens had over 24,000 member technicians in 2022, more than in 2019 and 2021 and this reflects the revived activity in their field. The proportion of female technicians is gradually increasing and they now account for 42% of the industry. To conclude, Carla Ballivian pointed out that this award has been part of the Cannes Film Festival’s official awards since 1951, highlighting the industry and the diversity of the professions it comprises.

Carla Ballivian reminded us that Audiens has been a partner of the CST award since 2015. Charles Bussienne – Poly-Son Post-Production, General Manager

Charles Bussienne thanked the CST for its ongoing commitment to technical excellence in the film industry, enabling it to evolve and push back its boundaries. During his visit to the Poly-Son studio, Johnnie Burn confided “Sound guys are good guys”. As a former sound technician, Charles Bussienne acknowledged the award winner’s exceptional work on Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” and he concluded, “If hearing is among the main senses we have, then sound is the most original language of cinema, and you, Johnnie Burn, are one of its finest artistes.

To a thunder of applause, Johnnie Burn received his award from Charles Bussienne and Sylvie Lancrenon’s photograph from Carla Ballivian. He underlined that receiving this award was the honour of a lifetime. The sound design for The Zone of Interest is the result of a year of research and two years of hard work in collaboration with Jonathan Glazer. Johnnie thanked everyone who contributed to this creation and above all, his team. He expressed his gratitude to the director and crew, as the film conveys a profound message that deserved to be recounted with seriousness and sensitivity. Johnnie Burn dedicated the award to the victims and survivors of this episode and to audiences who embrace the film and keep it alive. He ended by thanking the CST, the jury and the Cannes Film Festival.

Angelo Cosimano thanked the jury comprising Chloé Cambournac, Laëtitia Masson, Simon Depardon and Jean Minondo. He reminded us that the prize was awarded to Tamas Zanyi in 2015 for László Nemes’ Son of Saul – two very different artistic proposals, both of which used the power of sound to make the extent of the disaster perceptible: “vertigo and anguish are induced mainly by sound”. Angelo rounded off the ceremony by thanking Johnnie Burn for understanding this and communicating it.
